Progressive Christian

I went to a Dinner/meeting with a Peace and Justice group that I belong to the other day. They were doing future planning. Earth Day for next year was a topic and possible event and I mentioned that I have been working with the Progressive Christian aspect of approaching a number of issues, including the environment , for a couple of years now, and I would be glad to speak on Earth Day. Someone made the comment " I have never heard the words progressive and Christian used in the same sentence". I sure hope we can do a better job of educating people that there is Progressive Christian point of view on a number of issues. I live in an area that people calling themselves christians has to number over 95% and about half the local population goes to church on Sunday. (It's a very rural area). When "Lefties"want to include some form of spritual comment on occasions like Earth Day, they often get a Native American or Buddhist viewpoint, but rarely look to the mainstream tradition that surrounds them here in America. On issues like the environment, it is a battle to convince people that we Christians are not all sitting around with tin foil hats on waiting for the rapture and really have no environmental concern.

Thanks so much for this thoughtful piece. I have really enjoyed reading your thoughts over these last few years at Crossleft.org and hope to be reading you here in the years to come. Hope all is well on the Upper Pennisula.
