Sept. 11 commemorative events planned for the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, have been moved to new locations after a large crane repairing earthquake damage fell on part of the building.

Churches and other faith-based organizations around the United States are gearing up to present a message of hope, faith, tolerance and unity as the nation observes the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

No applause here for those applauding the deaths of people without health insurance. Instead we offer ways to refute such barbaric attitudes with scripture.

Ever notice how, when one has been faithful in personal devotion, joyful in corporate worship, and practiced acts of love and justice, that something often comes along to kick you in the teeth?

That something this week was the report from the U.S. Census Bureau announcing that 1 in 6 Americans is now living below the poverty line. Released Sept. 13, the report shows that the overall poverty rate rose to 15.1 percent of all Americans, or 46.2 million people. The official poverty level is an annual income of $22,314 for a family of four.

Twice as many people around the world joined in a "Day of Debauchery and Gluttony" as those who attended Texas Gov. Rick Perry's "Day of Prayer and Fasting" in Houston on Aug. 6. What's more, they had fun poking fun at Perry's egregious hijacking of First Amendment privileges for conservative  Christians only.

Mark Kaplan of Dallas, Texas, started a Facebook joke about Texas Gov. Rick Perry's "Day of Prayer and Fasting" on Aug. 6, and it turned into a worldwide phenomenon.

Islamophobia reared its evil, ugly head in the form of an email calling people to stop a Muslim event scheduled at a local hotel, denying participants their constitutional rights to free assembly, freedom of speech and freedom of worship.

Islamophobia reared its evil, ugly head in my backyard this week, in the form of an email from some church acquaintances calling people to stop a Muslim event scheduled at a hotel in a north Dallas suburb called Richardson.

What does it take to be Community? It's a simple question. It's basic and clear. As a current situation in Chicago shows, why is it so difficult?

World Council of Churches News

As the sun rises on Sunday, May 22 Christians and churches across the world are being encouraged by the World Council of Churches (WCC) to celebrate God’s peace in their worship services, to hold a Peace Sunday dawn vigil, to plant a tree as an act of peace or to use social media to share prayers for peace with Christians around the world.

The first woman to be editor and publisher of The Progressive Christian's predecessor publication, Zion's Herald, was known for her courage and conviction.

The Rev. Ann Greene Whiting, my friend and colleague of 23 years as well as my predecessor in this office, could be described in a singular phrase: “courage and conviction.” Yet she was so much more to the family, friends and colleagues now mourning her March 28 death from kidney failure at age 63.

A Facebook post questioning the existence of an eternal hell proved to be a point of no return for a United Methodist student pastor and his rural North Carolina congregation.

A Facebook post questioning the existence of an eternal hell proved to be a point of no return for a United Methodist student pastor and his rural North Carolina congregation.

However, there is more to the story than what has been widely reported about Chad Holtz’s departure from Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Henderson, N.C.

Jury duty, corporate serfs and lots of LGBT news this week in the Monday Mail.

Posting a short Monday Mail this week because I have been called to fulfill a citizen's responsibility: jury duty. I doubt I'll get put on a jury because my progressive views don't mesh with Texas courts, but I will show up. So here's some gleanings from Sunday night.

Now we're at war on a third front: Libya. Does anybody recall a congressional declaration of war against Libya, which is what the U.S. Constitution requires? No, me neither.

In the 3 years since Proposition 8 passed,  I learned that there are Mormon, Evangelical and Catholic groups that are fighting for gay rights and that more Christians in each denomination are speaking out for their gay friends and family members.    This is important for both the LGBT and the Christian communities.

During the 2008 election year, one of the biggest political fights in the California state ballot was on Proposition 8, a proposition against gay marriage. Sadly, the proposition passed. One of the keys to the passage of Proposition 8 was the efforts of the Mormon church, the Evangelical church, and the Catholic church to lobby its members to vote for the measure. A friend of mine told me that two weeks before the elections, the pastor in the evangelical church that he attends in Cupertino had a sermon against gay marriage.

Today something truly important has occurred. A non-violent revolution pushed a dictator (one of our dictators) from power. The joy being expressed in Tahrir Square in Cairo reminds me of the night the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. I remember watching that event unfold on live TV.

Today something truly important has occurred. A non-violent revolution pushed a dictator (one of our dictators) from power. The joy being expressed in Tahrir Square in Cairo reminds me of the night the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. I remember watching that event unfold on live TV. The world that I had known from birth -- I was 31 at the time -- had begun to crumble. With the fall of the Berlin Wall a series of changes in the world began -- the old Soviet Empire itself began to crumble. I understand that the process of democratization continues, but it had a beginning.

After a digital Sabbath, the Monday email inbox is a crazy quilt of notes, scams and some jaw-dropping comments from around the 'Net.

Going through my Monday email is a bit like being Alice in Wonderland. I never know what's going to pop out of the rabbit hole. That's because I do my best to observe at least one day each weekend as a digital Sabbath. I don't read email, go on Facebook or tweet. Like my daily prayers, this personal "rule of life" can be hard to keep, and I fail about as often as I succeed.

The Internet has been as revolutionary an invention as the printing press of 500 years ago, changing authority structures, democratizing information, and reframing societal expectations. So how are churches responding to this phenomenon?

One of the many things I cherish about my 17 years at the United Methodist Reporter newspaper was the collaborative working style of the editorial staff. Each Monday morning we gathered for spiritual devotions and rigorous, sometimes even fierce, critique of the newspaper product we had created that week. Two questions encapsulated this vigorous assessment of the Reporter's capacity as a media form to affect events and issues through communications:

What have we done FOR [our audience] the Church, and what have we done TO the Church?

Anne Murray's song from 1983 seems just as appropriate now because of the tragic events of this January.

I came across this video crosslink while checking my Facebook account. Seems appropriate to me after the many tragic events of January 2011. A prayer for those injured and killed in the Moscow airport bombing would be welcomed. Thanks to Rev. Andy James of Tuttle, OK, for posting the link originally.

Sarah Palin's 'blood libel' reference shows at best an ignorance of history and at worst an attempt to equate criticism of her language with centuries of prejudice and violence against Jews. This is the kind of hyperbole that must be removed from discourse in both church and society.

Words have specific meanings. As an educator, theologian, and a minister-in-training, I take care in choosing my words—whether spoken or written—carefully. With her Jan. 12 speech on the Tucson shooting, Sarah Palin illustrated to me that her gross ignorance is harmful to others.
