In preparation for National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11, the Religious Institute is pleased to offer worship resources to assist clergy in speaking out in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens and young adults. Please feel free to modify any of these in order to better serve your faith community.

In a historic move, the United Nations has endorsed the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people for the first time ever. The resolution adopted June 17 has drawn praise from the U.S. government and criticism from some Muslim and African countries, according to Yahoo News.

Many prayers are being answered in the newly announced stance of The White House and the U.S. Justice Department that the federal Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and should be struck down.

Just as TPC blogger Angelo Lopez notes in his latest post, the number of supporters for LGBT rights is rising -- and now includes the President and the U.S. Justice Department, according to the following alert received at approximately 3:30 PM (CT) Feb 23 from the New York Times:

In the 3 years since Proposition 8 passed,  I learned that there are Mormon, Evangelical and Catholic groups that are fighting for gay rights and that more Christians in each denomination are speaking out for their gay friends and family members.    This is important for both the LGBT and the Christian communities.

During the 2008 election year, one of the biggest political fights in the California state ballot was on Proposition 8, a proposition against gay marriage. Sadly, the proposition passed. One of the keys to the passage of Proposition 8 was the efforts of the Mormon church, the Evangelical church, and the Catholic church to lobby its members to vote for the measure. A friend of mine told me that two weeks before the elections, the pastor in the evangelical church that he attends in Cupertino had a sermon against gay marriage.

The shadow over DADT's repeal: LGBT people remain second-class citizens in the nation  they may defend through military service.

Glad as I am over the demise of the infamous "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy regarding LGBT people serving openly in the US military, I remain troubled by the fact that this right was gained in the context of warmongering instead of peacemaking.

Over 800 videos have been submitted for the "It Gets Better Project", and among those who have submitted are Christians, Muslims and Jews who are either gay or lesbian or who want to show support for their LGBT friends.
