Church and state intersect in plenty of ways this week, from the U.S. Supreme Court hearing a labor case on the "ministerial execution" to the barbarity of state-sponsored executions.

There's lots of church-state intersection in Faith and the Common Good on this first official day of fall, so let's get right to it.

A case involving the firing of a teacher with a disability from a religious school has gone before the U.S. Supreme Court in what many see as a test of the traditional "ministerial exception" regarding hiring practices for religious organizations.

A group of Houston clergy leaders has issued an open letter opposing Texas Gov. Rick Perry's proclamation for an Aug. 6 "prayer and fasting" event at the city's Reliant Stadium.

The Houston Chronicle reports that a group known as the Houston Clergy Council, "a welcoming and affirming interfaith coalition of Houston clergy leaders," has issued an open letter opposing Texas Gov. Just over two years ago, I read my first Howard Zinn book. The book was A People's History of the United States and it taught me a lot about the struggles of Native Americans, African Americans, women, war resisters and workers to overcome prejudice and fight for their rights in this country.

A highly respected retired professor, James Clemons, dies as a result of a commuter train accident in Maryland.

The Rev. James T. "Jim" Clemons, 81, a popular and influential teacher for three decades of seminarians, died Jan. 14 in Gaithersburg, MD, as the result of a collision with a train.

When the loud crossing signal alerted commuters to the arrival of the 7:47 a.m. southbound train toward Union Station, Dr. Clemons joined a crowd crossing the tracks. The station has neither an overhead bridge nor an underground tunnel for pedestrians to cross the tracks safely.
